A Visit to Nick Mackman's Garden & Studio

Nick Mackman is a sculptor who creates marvelous Raku-fired clay sculptures of domestic, wild, and endangered animals. Nick has always loved and drawn animals, but this became a consuming passion when she studied wildlife illustration in college, studying animal anatomy, physiology, and the muscle groups of animals in motion. "I also spent some time as a rhino keeper at the Chester Zoo," she says, "which I found invaluable. I was able to touch a lot of animals which proved to be a revelation, especially the elephants and lizards."

She has been widely exhibited and in 2012 she was Overall Runner-up and Go Wild Category winner in the Wildlife Artist of the Year competition.

The Garden Club visited this talented artist in June 2012. We looked around her garden and studio and watched in awe as she created a warthog from a lump of clay.
